About Susan

Incumbent Susan Mitchell was appointed by the Christina School Board to fill a vacancy from September of 2020 to June 30, 2021.  In order to complete the vacated term, which ends in June of 2022, she must stand for election on May 11, 2021.

In addition to her Board membership, Mitchell also serves as Christina's representative to the Delaware School Boards Assn. Legislative Committee. Her career has been entirely devoted to supporting public schools as a parent, teacher and community activist, seeing her daughter through CSD schools from K-12, and teaching diverse student populations English and theatre in the district for 23 years before retiring in 2017.

Susan has lived in Newark since 1991, serving briefly on the board in 1993-94. Prior to coming to Delaware, she lived with her family in The Netherlands for almost eight years. She co-developed a successful teacher training model for the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, which received the first "Research into Practice Award" from the American Educational Research Association. Pilot sites for the project were San Francisco, Washington D.C. and New York City, for which she was the liaison. While overseas, she continued training Dept. of Defense Schools teachers. That program is now expanded and in place in over 200 local districts across the country and overseas.

Mitchell has held numerous leadership positions in PTA units including Downes, Gauger-Cobbs, Shue-Medill and Newark High, AFT and NEA affiliates, and community groups. She currently serves as secretary for the Newark Branch of the NAACP, advisor for the Greater Newark Youth Council NAACP, and served a two-year term on the board of the NCC League of Women Voters. Mitchell is the chair of the LWV NCC Student Projects program.
